The publication of Ray’s a Laugh in 1996 and the appearance of Richard Billingham’s photographs of his family were among the defining events of the art of the 1990s. The images were deeply shocking, not so much for their content but for how that content inspired such honest, beautiful, tender images – images which reflect an extraordinary instinctive compositional skill and painterly sensibility. Within six months Ray was gracing the cover of Artforum; within a year there were solo exhibitions at Luhring Augustine, Regen Projects, Massimo de Carlo, Jennifer Flay and representation in major museum collections worldwide. More than 30 pieces were included in ‘Sensation’ in 1997, the exhibition that defined the decade. The stand at Frieze includes several rare, iconic pieces kept back from Billingham’s first gallery exhibition.
