Anne Massey is a curator and writer who looks at the spaces between art and design. She is founding editor of the Bloomsbury journal, Interiors: Design, Architecture, Culture and Research Associate, ICA Archives. She is the leading expert on the interdisciplinary history and contemporary significance of the Independent Group. She has written eight books - Interior Design of the Twentieth Century (Thames & Hudson); Blue Guide: Berlin and Eastern Germany (A & C Black); The Independent Group: Modernism and Mass Culture in Britain, 1945-59 (Manchester University Press); Hollywood Beyond the Screen: Design and Material Culture (Berg); Designing Liners: Interior Design Afloat (Routledge); Chair (Reaktion): Out of the Ivory Tower: The Independent Group and Popular Culture (Manchester University Press) and ICA 1946-68 (ICA). Anne has appeared on BBC4 and Channel 4 television, as well as BBC Radio 4. She has lectured widely in museums, galleries, colleges and universities in the UK, France, Holland, Italy and the USA and curated exhibitions at Dover Street Market, the ICA and Millais Gallery. Anne studied at the University of Northumbria (then Newcastle Polytechnic) for a BA (Hons) History of Modern Art and Design and then a PhD on ‘The Independent Group: Towards a Redefinition’, awarded in 1984. She has supervised 9 MPhil/PhDs to completion on art and design, and has externally examined 13. She has secured funding from the AHRC, British Academy, Paul Mellon Foundation and the Scouloudi Foundation. This includes two collaborative doctoral awards with the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
