Professor of Animation Aesthetics; Director of the Art and Design Research Institute (ADRI)


Suzanne Buchan is Professor of Animation Aesthetics in the School of Art and Design and Director of the Art and Design Research Institute (ADRI). Before joining Middlesex University in 2013 she was a professor and Director of the Animation Research Centre at the University for the Creative Arts, UK.  She completed her PhD at the University of Zurich, lectures internationally and has been a Guest Professor at the University of British Columbia's Department of Film, Theatre and Creative Writing, Pacific Northwest College of Art, and the Technical University of Stuttgart. 

Buchan is founder and Editor of animation: an interdisciplinary journal, the academic and philosophical remit of which is firmly rooted in her research interests. She has been awarded funding from the AHRC, Arts Council England, Science Research Investment Fund (SRIF), the UK Film Council and Pro Helvetia (Switzerland), and she is also active as a film and exhibition curator. She is a Member of the AHRC Peer Review College, Panel Chair for the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Awards scheme (2011), and peer reviewer / editorial board member for the Swiss National Science Foundation, Adaptation (Oxford Journals), MIRAJ Moving Image Review and Art Journal (Intellect), Routledge and University of California Press.

Buchan has established a number of groups with the specific aim to support, encourage and foster graduate students, ie the Animated Media Scholarly Interest Group (SIG) at the Society for Cinema an dMedia Studies:
