Launch of Active Energy Project

Launch of an arts and engineering initiative as part of the Hydrocitizenship research project

Middlesex University's Senior Lecturer in Fine Art Dr. Loraine Leeson has been working with engineers and an East London senior’s group to create prototypes for the creation of renewable energy that will support communities in East London. The project is being launched on 13 May as part of National Mills weekend.

In the latest phase of the Active Energy project, a floating water wheel is being placed in the River Lee close to an historic tidal mill.  The outflow from the mill pool will turn the wheel, which will then drive an aerator to oxygenate the water and counteract the effects of pollution on the river’s fish and wildlife.

The project is supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funded Hydrocitizenship initiative, in which Middlesex University is a partner. The wheel's low-cost open source design will be made available for others to take up the idea.

All are welcome to this launch event
